Gabin Cortez Chance

About the Artist:

Gabin Cortez Chance is a recent graduate of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and a participant in the 2006 Traveling Scholarship Competition at SMFA Boston. His work revolves around social and political issues with a severe leftist slant. Prefering the term "ART TERRORIST" rather than artist, he works in several different media's which includes, but is not limited to, video, performance, installation, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, propaganda, and urinating in the snow. Gabin has been featured in multiple magazines, zines, and newspapers, including Form Z, Student Underground Boston, and People have Ears (Fresno). He has performed internationally with Guillremo Gomez-Pena in Oaxaca, Mexico. And has worked and taught with Les LeVeque(NYC) at SMFA since '04. He has also participated and exibited in the Southern Graphics Council Symposium of '04(NJ), and '05(D.C.). Recently Gabin has performed in The Present Tense, Midway Studios, Boston.

Artist Statement

I strive to mold my art into some strange amalgamation of a superhero and vigilante cartoon character. Through a peaceful, yet poignant attack, I fight the ills of social, political, and corporate injustice. Like Rambo in a pink tutu, walking a tight rope over a sea of lube. I attempt to achieve a sense of strength, precision, and sexiness, but in the surreal landscape of the absurd. With little concern about my own image, reputation, or identity as viewed by others, I play jump rope with these false and imaginary constructs. And by dealing with these constructs on both a macro and micro level. I hope to illustrate an alternative view of our own so-called identities.
